KEYNOTE SPEAKER: MICHALE CALLAHAN
Michale Callahan is a retired Illinois State Police (ISP) Lieutenant and author of the book: Since When is Murder…Too Politically Sensitive. Callahan received the 2011 “Defender of the Innocent” award from the Illinois Innocence Project.
“Five times I tried to reopen the murder case of this young, newlywed couple, and each time my superiors told me the case was ‘too politically sensitive.’ How is a murder ‘too politically sensitive’?”
Retired ISP Lieutenant Michale Callahan, CBS, 48 Hours
Michale Callahan is simply a man who believed in his oath and motto, “Integrity. Service. Pride.”
In 1987, in the small town of Paris, IL., two men were convicted of a gruesome 1986 double murder, one of the men sentenced to Death Row. Callahan’s pursuit of justice would reveal a compromised investigation involving the local states attorney, a small town police officer, and an ISP investigator, then his chain of command fourteen years later along with two governors, both eventually convicted on federal corruption charges. An intriguing unsolved murder with tentacles to the Five Families of New York and Sicily, the case peels through layers of stunning corruption. Over 17 years later, a federal judge, Illinois Attorney General and state appellate court tossed out the wrongful convictions and the innocent men would be released from prison. Callahan won a First Amendment civil suit in federal court. But, the case is appealed all the way to the United States Supreme Court.
Then, in the US Supreme Court decision, every public employee in the country loses their free speech First Amendment rights!
Author signed copies, Since When is Murder…Too Politically Sensitive, will be provided complimentary to all attendees.
